On May 30, a group of Sioux Falls Up & Coming members traveled to Brookings, SD to volunteer at the Special Olympics South Dakota Summer Games.
Members were put to work at the men's shot put event, measuring each throw, raking the dirt (we're unsure of the technical term), wrangling the shot, celebrating with the winners at the platform, and keeping moral high for all of the athletes and their coaches and families.
After the final athletes finished throwing and posed for their awards, most of our members took to the ring and gave the shot their best throw. Daschle was crowned the unofficial member champion. And our event coordinator, Carter, easily had the best form.
Special Olympics South Dakota provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children (8 years and older) and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
